Story 284

I’ve read many of the stories on this platform and can relate to so much but what hits hardest are the constant microaggressions that wear you down. Being talked over in meetings, having an idea land only after a male colleague repeats it, being described as “too direct” for the same behavior that earns men praise. Over time, it creates this constant awareness that you’re not just doing your job – you’re also managing how you’re perceived in a way that others don’t have to think about.

Individually, each moment can be brushed off, even rationalized. But together, they shape how you move through your career – what risks you take, when you speak up, how much you push back. There’s a quiet exhaustion in always having to calibrate yourself, in wondering whether a missed opportunity was about performance or something less tangible. You learn to be resilient, of course, but resilience shouldn’t be a prerequisite for being treated fairly. I don’t know what’s to be done about it – it’s such an entrenched problem and women are expected to smile through it all. (Several women have made that joke here, so kinda fun to keep it going! You have to laugh, right?)

A Managing Director (generally considered to be well disposed toward the person in question) has asked whether the Head of Enterprise Risk and Balance Sheet Management at Citi’s USCC was the right person for the job. It is a fair question. Some months earlier, she had been introduced by the then Head of ERM as…

I agree with Story 256. Someone unfamiliar with Citi’s culture might think the incidents are too outrageous to be believed. And yet. They are true and there is worse. I had never thought I’d live to experience anything like it. Setting aside the gendered misconduct for a moment, what does that culture look like on…

To Story 242, what you have written here is brave, and I want to honor that. But I also want to name what is living beneath the surface of this reflection, because you have already named it yourself, even if you pulled back from its full weight. Angela Davis said that “we have to talk…

As a manager I saw the termination for more than 10 women in wealth business director level or above and no men were considered for the restructuring. This was not result based. When they send the JOB Restructuring package they include age but not gender as most women are being laid off.

I was a top performing Director at Citi when I was called into an HR investigation related to an employee who was unhappy about being placed on a performance plan. At the start of the call, the questions focused on that situation, as expected. Near the end of the discussion, without any warning or context,…
