Story 363

There is a Managing Director in the tech department in Tampa who is so insecure that he seeks affirmation from female subordinates.

It manifests in a couple of ways.

On one side are those given explicit leeway, with him stepping in to lead their meetings. The pretext is the stakeholders are difficult.

You’d think that inability to handle difficult stakeholders would disqualify you from promotion.

Think again. Because their success is visibly tied to the manager’s intervention, the manager feels powerful and indispensable.

On the other side are qualified, independent women who rely purely on merit, deliver results autonomously, and set firm professional boundaries.

If you refuse to act as an emotional support system, you will be resented for denying him his nurturing due (more if affinity).

His ability to feel important, worthy and successful is directly tied to his fantasy as a woman’s hero – wanted and admired.

Empowerment is precisely what gets you targeted.

Needless to say, male subordinates are not held to the same emotional tax.

This week, Fortune published a favorable profile of Jane Fraser and Citi’s turnaround. It is worth reading — for what it chooses not to examine. For investors, Fortune provides the “What” — the plan, the metrics, the narrative arc. What it does not provide is the “How” — the friction, the trust deficit, the litigation…

Dear Story 335, I, too, am a regular reader. It seems likely, from the breadth of stories, that Citi’s independent risk functions may be compromised. Similar concerns have been raised in the past about other institutions. For example, regulators found that a lack of independence of control functions contributed to the issues at Wells Fargo…

“We must do what they fear – tell the truth, spread the truth.” Alexei Navalny I was raised with conventional wisdom from another continent: don’t confront the attacker, it’ll make it worse. For years, I believed this. One day, I realized that while there is some truth to it, it was also a disservice to…

Another Asia story : Whilst we perceive Asia to be conservative, it is far worse than the West. Regressive men, patriarchal mindset – it reeks. Men retort to nastiness and passive aggression to put women down. I am referring to some Indian men in Private Banking in a financial hub in Asia (outside India) They…

I recently left a business execution role in Citi Wealth because the culture is chaotic, dysfunctional, and fundamentally toxic. I worked at another big bank for 12 years before coming here and I don’t know how to describe that everything here is surreal, almost fake. If you are part of a project, it’s impossible to…

As an early contributor to this site, I’ll take a guess that Citi’s C-suite is at least aware of it by now. I don’t believe for a second that any of them care in terms of culture, employees, or even customers. These are Careless People, focused on their own compensation and that of their cronies….
