Speaking of excellent books, two books every woman navigating corporate America should also read:
Walking on Broken Glass by Shannon Nutter and Julia Carreon is one of the most practical workplace books I’ve read. It doesn’t tell women to lean in, speak up or fix themselves. It explains the situations women actually encounter at work—the politics, double binds, takedowns and workplace land mines—and gives practical advice for recognizing them, navigating them and protecting yourself when things go sideways. It’s particularly useful for women moving into senior leadership, where being good at your job is often only half the battle.
Man-Made by Karen Korellis Reuther tackles the same problem from a different angle: the physical world itself. Reuther, a former global creative director at Nike, shows how everything from crash-test dummies and protective equipment to shoes and public spaces has historically been designed around male bodies and male needs—with consequences for women that range from ridiculous to genuinely dangerous.
Read together, the message is pretty hard to miss: women aren’t failing to navigate the world. Much of the world—our workplaces included—was not designed with women in mind.
