Story 12

I was laid off by Citi in January, 2024. I was 69 at the time and had a combined 45 years of tenure dating back to Shearson.

I had recently chosen to leave a Regional Director position managing the state of CA for Wealth Management. I was very highly regarded by my team, my colleagues and my direct manager. My position at the time of the RIF was a combination of roles that included running internal conferences and real estate optimization. I was not well liked by my 2 up manager.

It is interesting to note that I was a branch manager for Smith Barney in the 2000s and was part of those lay offs that significantly impacted a large percentage of female managers. We successfully meditated against SB and Morgan Stanley. Our attorney at the time said that they gave the women branches with only 3 wheels on the car and then punctured the remaining tires. So nothing much has changed.

I’m now happily retired but wish you all success and support in this ongoing endeavor.

I recently left a business execution role in Citi Wealth because the culture is chaotic, dysfunctional, and fundamentally toxic. I worked at another big bank for 12 years before coming here and I don’t know how to describe that everything here is surreal, almost fake. If you are part of a project, it’s impossible to…

To stories 203 and 206: I believe you. Both of you. On an instinct level. And that matters, because if it lands that way for me, it will land that way for others. Your accounts have the texture of truth. Speak them. What I would tell you both: do not walk into HR alone. Engage…

The Consent Order Problem No One Wants to Discuss I was hired for specialized regulatory work. My background was exactly what the firm needed. An older colleague pulled me aside one day and said something I’ll never forget: “Citi doesn’t want outside ideas. Let your manager present your work as theirs.” I initially thought they…

I raised concerns with Citi’s Employee Relations about the circumstances of my layoff. I had been eliminated as part of what the bank characterized as a reorganization. I did not accept that characterization. The pattern I observed and reported was the systematic elimination of experienced employees that a senior manager in the Consumer Bank’s risk…

A local private bank in a major financial hub in Asia fired me ruthlessly for speaking up on sexual harassment. On work travel a senior MD touched my breasts without my consent. He bragged he did it tactfully, asked me to loosen up and not be shy and give in. He threatened to end and…

I left the industry in the mid 2010s to start a marketing agency, having concluded that even the “good guys” are prejudiced against women. I was working at a Big 5 bank for a woman (let’s call her ‘S’) who may have been the hardest working person to walk the earth. She was married; her…
