Story 35

I’ve been in finance for 10 years. When I joined a grad scheme in the City- a male director described as ‘punchy’ was hired onto the team from another bank.

For the next two years he would harass me on the trading floor – in front of colleagues, he’d ask why I was so happy and called me names like princess and use derogatory terms about women openly.

When I raised the issue at my quarterly reviews, management told me to just stand up for myself. I was 22. I didn’t know how to ‘stand up for myself’.

After 2 years, I resigned to go to a competitor because I’d had enough- and the director in question was mysteriously fired. HR asked me not to include any mention of the harassment in my exit interview.

He turned up seamlessly at another bank shortly after.

The Financial Times is reporting today that Citi’s former head of the family office previously served as Jeffrey Epstein’s personal banker – a detail one might reasonably expect any competent organisation to identify during the most elementary due-diligence checks. The article drily observes, it “begs the question of what Citi’s process actually involves.” This on…

The comments got uncomfortable. Eventually, anonymous questions were no longer allowed. Leadership said they ‘couldn’t help without knowing what was going on.’ The irony was lost on no one: the reason…

Thank you Story 135/136, you’re story helps me realize I’m not crazy and that this system is built to drive away talent. There seem to be no standards or expectations of managers other than that they were loyal to their managers and not a threat to their career. This leads to one ineffective leader cascading…

I was recruited by an MD in USCC Risk for a role I was told would come with 5 direct reports — a management seat, in line with the director-track conversation we’d had very explicitly. I didn’t interview with her in the final round. When I noted that at the time, I was told it…

Story 364 – this makes me wish even more that I had been in the room when Jamie Dimon told Marianne Lake she was no longer part of JP Morgan’s succession plan. Everyone knows how ambitious she is. The rumours that she turned down a generous retention package rather than remain in her role, keep…
