Story 190

Like most here, I am no stranger to working for inappropriate managers, and I wouldn’t normally waste time with HR. But after enduring nearly a year of well-documented and bizarre retaliation following the reporting of a sensitive client risk issue at another global wealth management firm, I am still a deer in headlights from the weaponized HR process that followed.

I am saddened by the stories in the news and on this site, yet I am comforted to know my experience was not unusual. The lingering effects of senior management and HR gaslighting hits the hardest.

To the Citi HR business partner (story 185) who confirmed these tactics– YOU ARE MY HERO! I often wonder if the HR representatives I encountered felt conflicted in their actions yet powerless. I hope that other HR leaders, including those at my former employer, are paying close attention. Beyond justice for these individuals, meaningful reform of unethical HR practices is long overdue.

Since my departure, I have learned that my former manager has quietly had their managerial duties removed. This doesn’t repair the damage, but it confirms that my experience was seen and heard and it was real. Best of luck to the women in this community and to anyone else facing similar circumstances elsewhere.

The Moral Stakes: When Complicity Is By Design The people running these systems know they’re corrupt. They’re not confused. They’re complicit. “Citi is a bank with a brain and a bank with a SOUL” and “Our clients love doing business with us because we are good people.” These are Jane Fraser’s most commonly used refrains, though I think she finally stopped claiming bank with a soul because it is very, very clearly the most soul-less place…
