Story 272

Thank you to Story 259 for testifying that even men think Citi is a professionally bankrupt environment. The baseless arrogance in this place is staggering — particularly given how little actual capability underlies it.

When MDs were pushed out in the 2023 reorganization, some called the Big Four looking for positions and couldn’t be placed — because they had nothing of transferable value to offer. Years at Citi, senior titles, and nothing that translated outside the walls.

That is what happens when an institution promotes obedience over competence and replaces accountability with tenure. Citi produces institutional survivalists. That is not the same as worth or stature — if it’s any consolation to anyone reading this.

Most of Citi’s current and former Black senior leaders were not developed exclusively within the organization. They were recruited because they brought distinguished credentials, significant leadership experience, and proven records of delivering results. They were accomplished executives who chose Citi, many during a period when the company publicly committed to increasing diversity within its leadership…

*This story has been edited. See below for detail. My story involves one of Wall Street’s most powerful lobbying organizations in Washington, Investment Company Institute and its CEO Eric Pan. Pan is known to act out towards his staff and really can’t handle strong women who disagree with him. Sometimes his behavior goes farther. A…

I’ve read most of the stories about Citi and none summarize what a daily grind this place is quite like 144. Every day feels less like work and more like navigating a maze that rearranges itself while you’re inside it. Priorities shift without explanation, decisions are revisited endlessly, and clarity is treated as optional. It’s…

In my 20s, while working on a sales team at Morgan Stanley, I experienced repeated sexual harassment that became normalized. A well-known external wholesaler made unwanted advances toward me for months. At a firm-hosted event, he forcefully pulled me into a room, kissed and touched me until I pushed him off and left. The next…
