Story 274

Dear Story 273,
You make excellent points about the churn in Citi’s Enterprise Data office. The dysfunction there runs long and deep. The firm was sued by a senior hire brought in from JPMorgan in 2021 to run governance for the program—I knew her, and she was both capable and effective.

According to her lawsuit, she was fired by COO [REDACTED] after refusing to lie to regulators about the program’s status. She was then replaced by someone with far less relevant experience, but with close ties to [REDACTED]. Worth noting that [REDACTED] staggering incompetence is the reason why Wealth was driven into a ditch before [REDACTED] arrived, and the person [REDACTED] replaced [REDACTED] with was also a factor in why Wealth failed.

So they promoted two men who had visibly failed and were accused of lying to regulators into more senior roles, which tells you everything you need to know about the company’s ethics (or lack thereof).

And, oh, Citi settled this lawsuit – what does that tell you?

To Story 215, Citi knows regulators don’t care because of who is in the White House. I also think its C-suite – especially Jane – gets off on the desperation and sadness in these stories; in their mind, anyone who doesn’t like the place simply isn’t up to snuff. I do, however, think it makes…

I joined Citi as an aspiring analyst in structured products. The desk didn’t have the best reputation, but I genuinely believed that hard work and commitment could change things — and that I could earn my place. I worked mostly with a French director. On good days, she was responsive and willing to teach. On…

When the institution betrays those it employs for their livelihoods. Managers who don’t manage. Leaders who don’t lead. There’s a question that gets wielded like a weapon at Citi: If you’re not happy, why don’t you leave? It sounds like honesty. It isn’t. It’s a deflection — a way of avoiding accountability while making discontent…

A local private bank in a major financial hub in Asia fired me ruthlessly for speaking up on sexual harassment. On work travel a senior MD touched my breasts without my consent. He bragged he did it tactfully, asked me to loosen up and not be shy and give in. He threatened to end and…

As someone still working for the said bank under scrutiny, I can identify with so many stories mentioned here and whilst it’s comforting knowing I’m not alone in my struggles, it’s also disheartening to see how deeply entrenched and common these issues are. I’ve experienced misogyny, been passed on for promotions, told I should have…
