Story 217

Coercive control at work is not bad management. It is not a personality clash. It is a pattern of behavior — deliberate, directed, and purposeful.

I experienced this at Citi, in USPB Risk Management — under a former “manager” himself working under a known bully and harasser. As a sustained and consistent pattern directed specifically at me.

Micromanagement by someone whose actual experience and seniority were less than my own.

Surveillance — he personally disclosed to me eavesdropping on my telephone calls.

Communication restrictions — controlling my access to senior personnel to create the illusion that he was driving the ship.

Boundary guilt — not to assert self because “some people hold a grudge”. The message was clear: stay small, stay silent, or face consequences.

Credit theft — my achievements credited to others to manufacture justification for my elimination.

I suspect if asked, he would claim he was simply following instructions from his own manager. But “just following orders” does not absolve the behavior, especially when it directly contravenes Code of Conduct and companion policies.

What it confirms is more troubling: it was sanctioned from above.

This is how toxic leadership protects itself — not just by silencing dissent, but by deploying coercive control downward through the hierarchy, against the people whose competence and visibility threaten those above them.

If you recognize this pattern, you are not imagining it. And you are not alone.

I’ve been watching the site traffic here since it made the press. I’m one of many women who, I believe, was wronged by Citi’s HR department for reasons that still don’t fully make sense to me. I don’t think I’ll ever understand it. There will always be people who dismiss a site like this as…

To Story 252: know that you aren’t alone—and you aren’t “crazy”. The “gaslighting” of an altered performance review is a classic corporate tactic used to create a paper trail for future termination or to justify withholding bonuses/promotions. 1. Ensure those screenshots and logs are saved on a personal device.2. Send a firm, professional follow-up to…

The Government Contractor Shield Citi invoked government contractor status to mandate COVID vaccines — a legally and politically contentious decision that affected every employee globally. It was framed as compliance obligation rather than corporate choice. The message being: our hands are tied by our relationship with the government. Then when the Trump administration dismantled DEI…

Re: Story 176 – yes, I noticed it too. When a Chief Legal Officer publicly endorses the LinkedIn post of a senior leader facing active discrimination allegations, it stops being a casual gesture and becomes an institutional statement. [REDACTED], Citi’s CLO, is among the male senior leaders visibly rallying around [REDACTED] on LinkedIn — a…

Stories 85 and 94 are worse than anyone can imagine. The Technology group at Citi is known internally as the “Indian Mafia.” For years, it has operated like an unchecked power center where people do whatever they want, whenever they want.
