Story 228

*This story has been edited. See below for detail.

My story involves one of Wall Street’s most powerful lobbying organizations in Washington, Investment Company Institute and its CEO Eric Pan. Pan is known to act out towards his staff and really can’t handle strong women who disagree with him. Sometimes his behavior goes farther. A group of ICI staff have written to its Board of Directors detailing how he fired a senior female staffer and her boss because they reported his inappropriate behavior towards her. The message sent to me and other women on staff is that he can act however he wants and there will be no consequences. If I dare go to HR to complain about the abhorrent behavior I have observed by Mr. Pan – I will be fired. The effort has been written about in NOTUS – https://www.notus.org/money/investment-company-institute-eric-pan-lobbying

The ICI Board includes leaders from BlackRock, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. https://www.ici.org/ici-board-of-governors

They do not seem to care how the CEO of ICI treats his staff.

*One of our community members inquired why the name of the ICI CEO had been redacated since it is our policy to publish the names of CEOs, as they are held to a higher fiduciary standard than other company officers. This was our error. We strive for consistency and it has been corrected.

I learned about this site today from a woman who is familiar with the high-profile lawsuits involving Citi. Coincidentally, [REDACTED] of Morgan Lewis, who is representing Citi in some of these matters, was one of the attorneys who represented Merrill Lynch in employment cases in the mid 2010’s. I know because I was a plaintiff….

Citi’s consent order on risk management and the consent order on data are not independent. Yet, the organization has decoupled them to check the box on one while the prerequisite for doing it properly remains unmet. Out of strategy for closure. All the while understanding their dependency. Risk management systems rely entirely on underlying data….

“Owning it” only counts when it costs you something. USCC was warned that more cases would surface around a particular repeat bully and discriminator. A two-year record of actionable complaints wasn’t enough for them apparently. Now, more have surfaced. Two makes a trend. Three makes a pattern. Beyond that, are they cultivating a teflon class…

I’m a woman in my late 20s working on the buyside, and not enough is said about the role women sometimes play in undermining their peers’ careers. A few years ago, two of my colleagues were competing for a promotion, and one of them, in an attempt to get ahead, started flirting with senior bankers….
