Citi’s Legal Dept: When the “Hold” is as Blind as the Justice

If you thought working at a Tier 1 bank meant dealing with sophisticated systems, think again.

Two of my team members received a Formal Legal Hold from Citi’s Legal Department. The issue? The hold covered a specific department and timeframe during which none of them were even Citi employees.

When we pointed out this glaring chronological impossibility, we were met with disbelief. Imagine the grotesque Kafka-like loop of proving your own existence (or lack thereof) to the very company that issued the offer letters and should know start dates and career history.

If Citi can’t manage a basic employee list for a legal process, how poor would their data integrity in Discovery?

Imagine what their compliance reporting looks like. Not to mention: how can they claim to manage global risk?

I saw Citi posted record earnings today. Good for them. Anyone, like me, who chooses to work at a bank is a capitalist so no judgment. That said, it’s fair to ask whether the firm might be even more successful if it reinvested just some of those profits into meaningfully improving its culture, rather than…
