Story 389

My manager at Citi (I am in technology) regularly leaves the women who report to him off emails and other critical communications. Information gets shared only with the men on his team. When it has been brought to his attention, he says he simply “forgot” to include us.

Several of us reported the pattern to HR and participated in an investigation. We all confirmed individually that it had happened repeatedly. We were later told the investigation found no issue with his behavior.

Recently, I learned from someone in Wealth that women on her team had reported essentially the same problem. Their male manager was excluding them from communications – even hosting offsites without them. HR investigated that situation too. According to her, the women were ultimately told they were being “too sensitive” and that the exclusions were “accidental.”

It’s difficult to hear about the same behavior happening in different parts of the company, followed by similar responses from HR, and continue to view these as isolated incidents. You might think having a female CEO would mean these kinds of complaints are taken more seriously. Based on my experience, that assumption would be wrong.
