Story 449

Story 447, Citi calls moving U.S. Retail Banking under Wealth a “refinement.” I’d call it the third redraw of the same lines in a few years.

First, consumer banking sat under the old global structure. Then the five-business model put Retail, Branded Cards and Retail Services together in U.S. Personal Banking, separate from Wealth. Now Retail goes to Wealth and Cards stands alone.

Each design is defensible. Three in quick succession is trial-and-error, and it isn’t free: severance, rebranding, restated financials, and lost productivity as reporting lines shift and good people get displaced.

The official logic is that Retail is a funnel into Wealth, and Wealth needs deposits for funding. But mass-market and high-net-worth clients need very different service models. Since 2022, about 325,000 retail customers have upgraded to Citigold. That’s small against the base.

The question to watch: will Wealth’s results now lean on cheap deposit income that gets presented as wealth growth?

The Head of Cards is certainly a more impressive and inspiring leader than the Citi-bred executives that play musical chairs in each round of corporate restructuring.

She launched an exciting new credit card, Strata, in 2024 and was certainly the best place to head up the Cards unit.

The story is less about whether she’s being set up with a glass cliff, and more about the ticking time bomb she inherited from the now CFO who hoped a CCAR-adjacent problem would simply disappear. Specifically, an MD with a documented track record of systemic discrimination, bullying and retaliation.
