Story 341

Dear Story 340, do not be discouraged or dismayed. What you are noting is a textbook corporate counter-offensive to a perceived threat: the impact of truth-telling thanks to the Wall Street Discriminates platform.

Here’s what I would like to point out:

First, on the question of Fraser’s relationship with Trump: let’s be precise about what’s actually happening.

Citi considers themselves a U.S. government contractor because of the consent order. That’s not a peer relationship with the White House — that’s a supplicant relationship.

Fraser doesn’t navigate Trump; under these circumstances, she reports to him.

Second, the idea that anyone has cracked the code on Trump’s favor is fiction, not a fact.

Ask Kirstjen Nielsen. Ask Pam Bondi. Ask Kristi Noem. Proximity to power under this president has a half-life, and the people who’ve invested most heavily in the relationship have often fared worst when the wind shifted.

Political savvy implies some durable return on investment. There’s no evidence that exists here.

Third — and this is the one that gets buried in the turnaround coverage — closing a consent order through Washington relationships is not the same as having solved the problems that created it.

The technical debt, the cultural issues, the governance gaps: those are fixed through unglamorous institutional work, not through dinners and photo ops.

A narrative doesn’t eradicate the truth. It’s just a narrative. Cheating is not succeeding. Some of us were taught that you don’t get through the back door and call it talent.

Fourth: we’re seeing something interesting in response to forums like this one.

Senior people at this institution are suddenly very active on LinkedIn — posting selfies with Fraser, enthusiastically engaging with content that flatters the brand, declaring their allyship to women loudly. (Some have gotten sloppy about it: liking posts that, on closer inspection, have more to do with a young woman’s appearance than her insights.)

The performative support is visible. And the fact that it’s happening is itself a signal — it means this conversation is landing somewhere.

So let’s keep having it. The record we’re building here is the one that matters.

Everything else is noise trying to drown out a frequency it can’t shut off.

I was a Managing Director at Citi and when a significant promotion was available, it was given to a male who was a Director, a more junior title at Citi than Managing Director. By Citi’s own standards, I was senior to this male. I had to report to the male, who had less seniority and…

Concerns aren’t incomprehensible; they are inconvenient. During ERM town-halls at Citi, employees started submitting anonymous comments about retaliation by managers who kept being promoted. The comments got uncomfortable. Eventually, anonymous questions were no longer allowed. Leadership said they ‘couldn’t help without knowing what was going on.’ The irony was lost on no one: the reason…

Despite leading these efforts and…
