Story 9

At one point I was discussing with my line manager and HR to upgrade a role under me by hiring someone externally to replace an internal veteran. Given the long tenured contributions by the internal veteran, I want to be respectful and thoughtful to find her a role that would suit her. Instead HR was quick to say we would figure a way to push her out without severance. I repeat – HR was musing how to get rid of a 30-year employee who has been loyal, diligent and well liked, WITHOUT a fair and just treatment. In case anyone is wondering, the employee in question is a woman of Hispanic heritage and foreign born from South America.

Later, I watched as too many talented women executives were pushed in the same way. I should have seen it coming when it was my turn. A white male with real HR violations can walk away with a seven-figure compensation whilst a diverse women with a solid – or in Citi’s words “brilliant,” performance is terminated without appropriate justification and without a penny.

I agree with Story 256. Someone unfamiliar with Citi’s culture might think the incidents are too outrageous to be believed. And yet. They are true and there is worse. I had never thought I’d live to experience anything like it. Setting aside the gendered misconduct for a moment, what does that culture look like on…

Wall Street End Game Was anyone else disturbed, when Ruemmler stepped down as CLO, by Goldman Sachs’ former CEO Blankfein’s comment that in years past, the firm wouldn’t have gone after bad actor employees for fear it might make it harder to retain talent? Usually you hear the opposite argument. Employees don’t publicly denounce malfeasance…

I started my career on Wall Street over 20 years ago, on the trading floor where all kinds of shenanigans would be reported. The guys who asked why you didn’t wear a skirt that day, the head trader who had to be reminded to look someone in the eyes when speaking, not at their chest,…

Important story in the Financial Times today about the weaponization of Citi’s CSIS department. “CSIS’s stated goal is to “to protect the employees, assets, information, integrity and reputation of Citi and its clients”. But in interviews with the FT, current and former employees questioned how the unit is deployed and whether it places the bank’s…
