Story 251

A couple of months ago I submitted story 83, and I’m coming back here to report that I was laid off last week as part of Citi’s ongoing round of cuts. Unfortunately I can’t say I was surprised by the layoff though it was still a jarring experience. Since the start of the year, my manager stonewalled me, gave me a dead end role and refused to give me any meaningful work despite my asking numerous times for more productive work as I had capacity.

This was a deliberate and systematic attempt to get rid of me and he finally succeeded. I’m now left with only a few months to find another job or face possibly having to leave the country due to my visa status.

Citi really does an incredulous job of picking some managers, especially in Tech! Someone earlier submitted a story about misogyny against women by a certain race in Tech and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve personally experienced this firsthand throughout most of my time under this particular manager.

It is beyond comprehension why Citi has refused to address its toxic culture that is ruining its reputation, continuing to reward the bad actors and getting rid of those who see the rot and have the courage to speak out against it.

Citi’s consent order on risk management and the consent order on data are not independent. Yet, the organization has decoupled them to check the box on one while the prerequisite for doing it properly remains unmet. Out of strategy for closure. All the while understanding their dependency. Risk management systems rely entirely on underlying data….

To the person who posted in story 203, thank you for sharing your story. For years, having been in a similar situation, I felt it was my fault for allowing this abuse to happen. But I can see clearly now. This is how we’ve been manipulated to feel. Grooming does not start with the ask….
