Story 253

To Story 251 and all the others: I am so incredibly sorry that you’re going through this. There are few things more stressful than feeling like a “tracked animal” for months, knowing the axe is coming but being forced to wait for it.

What you are describing is part of Citi’s M.O. leading up to layoffs. It is a calculated strategy: they identify their targets early and then manufacture a documented “lack of performance” or “lack of business need” to ensure the exit appears lawful on paper.

Adding a visa countdown to this situation is an immense burden that no one should have to carry while also grieving their career. The same happened to me many years ago, and a solution presented itself.

But please, know in your heart of hearts that you are better off. Citi has become a godforsaken environment for talent, and the managers who have made themselves accomplices to this sham will eventually face the consequences of their actions. There is a law of the universe.

For now, take whatever steps you feel comfortable with for accountability purposes, but try to protect your peace. Turn your energy toward building a much better life elsewhere.

Citi has no interest in addressing the rot. They are using it for their dark transformational deeds.

I am a retired EVP at Wells Fargo. In my role, I provided regular updates to Carrie Tolstedt because my team managed a product the community bank sold. I raised concerns with Citi’s Employee Relations about the circumstances of my layoff. I had been eliminated as part of what the bank characterized as a reorganization. I did not accept that characterization. The pattern I observed and reported was the systematic elimination of experienced employees that a senior manager in the Consumer Bank’s risk…
