Story 251

A couple of months ago I submitted story 83, and I’m coming back here to report that I was laid off last week as part of Citi’s ongoing round of cuts. Unfortunately I can’t say I was surprised by the layoff though it was still a jarring experience. Since the start of the year, my manager stonewalled me, gave me a dead end role and refused to give me any meaningful work despite my asking numerous times for more productive work as I had capacity.

This was a deliberate and systematic attempt to get rid of me and he finally succeeded. I’m now left with only a few months to find another job or face possibly having to leave the country due to my visa status.

Citi really does an incredulous job of picking some managers, especially in Tech! Someone earlier submitted a story about misogyny against women by a certain race in Tech and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve personally experienced this firsthand throughout most of my time under this particular manager.

It is beyond comprehension why Citi has refused to address its toxic culture that is ruining its reputation, continuing to reward the bad actors and getting rid of those who see the rot and have the courage to speak out against it.

There is a manager in Rutherford — a long-time protégée of a senior data executive in Citi’s Data organization — who arrived in a Tech group without any relevant technological background. No engineering history. No product experience. No prior exposure to ERM. And yet she was handed technical teams to lead. What followed was predictable….

I will proudly contribute one positive story to Citi’s broken narrative: the women who work here are incredible, besides Fraser and her despotic head of HR, [REDACTED], who is clearly not right upstairs. The Indian women are particularly great. They work harder than anyone without credit and are beacons of what smart, humble, decent leaders…

What Citi’s transformation narrative is built to obscure You could tell this story as a mere list of process failures—bad methodology, weak leadership, an underused tool. That version is true, but it misses the point. The story is what those failures have in common: an organization that is asking how to demonstrate that remediation is…

How Many Voices Does It Take? One cannot help but think of Harvey Weinstein as Epstein’s extensive network of evil slowly absorbs into public consciousness. In a public video, Mariska Hargitay relayed something chilling about why Weinstein finally fell: there were “too many women’s voices” to ignore. Take a moment to process the implications of…
